Mombasa City
Mombasa has a long, rich history dating back over 1500 years when it started as a trading port. The Portugese explorer, Vasco Da Gama, landed here in 1498 and established a Portugese colony at the coast. Arabs from Oman later took over the city, leaving their mark on the region. Mombasa has a vibrant Swahili culture. There are a range of hotels to the north and south of Mombasa, known as the North and South coast respectively. [See below].

Mombasa North Coast
The northern coastline from Mombasa is well developed with a host of resort hotels. The concentration of the hotels thins out while moving towards Kilifi but intensifies again whilst in the Malindi area. The main beaches within this area include Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu & Kikambala. There are various activities on offer ranging from nature trails to fishing and golf.

Mombasa South Coast
To get to the South Coast from Mombasa, one takes the Ferry across a narrow channel, usually a colourful experience owing to lots of noise and bustle of the swahili people as they go about their daily business. South Coast is generally a quiter stretch of coastline than the North coast, which does have its advantages such as cleaner and less touristy beaches. Diani Beach is the most famous beach here and has several accomodation options from 5 star to cottages.

Lamu
Lamu is an interesting, historic place to visit, attracting lots of visitors year round. The ancient town has narrow winding streets, historic mosques, a fort, colourful markets and uses donkeys and dhows for transport with barely any sight of advanced modern technology. The slow pace of life here, magnificent and uncluttered beaches and the rich culture make this an exotic place to visit where time seems to stand still. The perfect place for honeymooners and couples. Browse Beach Hotels in the Lamu area.

Zanzibar Island:
This exotic island is famous for its long streches of beach, rich Swahili culture and architecture and a laid back, relaxed pace of life. Zanzibar hosts various beach hotels and resorts along its beaches as well as in Stone Town, the historic town which has several interesting places one could explore such as the Old Fort, Home of Wonders, Palace Museum, and Old Stone Market.
